At Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics in Lytle, TX, we get a lot of questions about orthodontic topics from parents. We’re always happy to answer these questions! Moving forward with orthodontic treatment is a big commitment and we’ve found that the more informed someone is prior to their treatment, the better they take care of their teeth during treatment and the better their results.
Read on to learn the answer to a question we get quite often: “When should my child get braces?”
Best Age for Braces
There’s no one specific age when it’s perfect to get braces. Chances are you even know of an adult or two who underwent orthodontic treatment! Or you even may be interested in getting braces yourself! It’s never too late to achieve a straighter smile. But for kids, braces treatment usually begins in the age range of 9 to 14. Many kids don’t need braces until all their adult teeth have come in around age 12 or 13, but some kids that still have baby teeth benefit from early orthodontic intervention. This could involve a variety of treatments, from spacers to a palatal expander to multiple phases of braces.
Early Orthodontic Evaluation
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children have an orthodontic screening by the time they turn 7 years old. Around this time, the teeth and jaws have developed sufficiently to indicate what a child’s bite alignment will likely be in the future. By having this early orthodontic screening, you can have more time to plan ahead and budget for any necessary treatment.
Even if you anticipate your child isn’t ready to get braces, we invite you to bring them in for an early orthodontic evaluation. Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics makes it easy by offering both children’s dental services and orthodontic services at our one-stop dental office in Lytle, TX!
