Are Braces or Clear Aligners Better for Teens?

At Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we offer several orthodontic treatment options: metal braces, ceramic braces, and Invisalign clear aligners. How do you know which one is the ideal option for your teenager?

In this blog post, we’ll cover the benefits and differences between these treatments to help decide which one is best for your teen’s situation.

Metal Braces

Metal braces are a versatile orthodontic treatment. If the mere thought of them reminds you of the uncomfortable, clunky metal braces of yesteryear, you’ll be pleased to know that advancements in orthodontic technology have allowed metal braces to evolve into a sleek, comfortable treatment option without compromising on its undeniable effectiveness.

Metal braces are great for patients with mild, moderate, or severe misalignment issues because they can treat every orthodontic issue, including crooked teeth, bite issues, rotation issues, and jaw alignment issues. Since braces are attached to the teeth the entire treatment, they’re good for patients who may lose track of removable clear aligners.

Ceramic Braces

Ceramic braces are similar to metal braces except that they use clear brackets to make them less noticeable. The upkeep for ceramic braces is essentially the same as metal ones except that the patient should be extra diligent in avoiding hard foods and keeping them thoroughly brushed since the ceramic is more susceptible to breakage and stains.

This option boasts the power of braces with a more discreet look.

Invisalign

Unlike braces which involve brackets and wires, Invisalign uses a set of clear aligners to straighten teeth subtly over time. The aligners are removable, so your child should remove their aligners when eating and brushing. Patients will receive new aligners every one to two weeks and must remember to wear their aligners at least 20-22 hours a day. We recommend Invisalign for older kids and teens who can responsibly commit to wearing and caring for their aligners.

Invisalign is ideal for those with mild to moderate gaps, crooked teeth, light rotation issues, and bite issues. However, clear aligner therapy cannot correct advanced orthodontic issues.
