Tooth-Friendly Snacks for Kids
June 27, 2020 5:55 pmYou can help your child achieve and maintain superb oral health by: encouraging them to brush and floss their teeth every day; bringing them to visit Tots to Teens Pediatric Dentistry every 6 months; and providing your child with a well-balanced, tooth-friendly diet. Here are five examples of tooth-friendly snacks for kids:
- Apples
- Carrots
- Cheese Sticks
- Celery
- Nuts & Seeds
Crunchy and full of fiber, apples are good at helping remove plaque from teeth. Chewing this fruit also encourages your mouth’s production of saliva, which helps neutralize acids that cause damage to a tooth’s enamel. Most kids love apples because of their natural sweetness, so they’re an easy snack. And for kids without certain allergies, apple slices are also yummy dipped in nut butter.
Jazz up carrot sticks with hummus or a homemade dip of Greek yogurt, chives, parsley, garlic powder, and salt. Yogurt contains tooth-strengthening minerals and good bacteria that promote a healthy mouth.
Cheese sticks are a filling, convenient snack for kids you can feel good about. Like yogurt, cheese is high in calcium, which is an essential mineral for strong teeth. It also has casein, a protein that fights against cavities and strengthens the enamel on your teeth.
Like all crunchy produce, celery helps scrape off plaque from teeth. The chewing also massages your gums and encourages saliva production. Many kids don’t enjoy eating plain celery, so try offering it with hummus, a low-sugar salad dressing, or a natural nut butter (as allergies permit).
Nuts and seeds contain a wide variety of nutrients like calcium, phosphorus, and magnesium. These help fight decay and strengthen enamel. Some of our favorite nuts and seeds include almonds, pistachios, cashews, pecans, pumpkin seeds, and sunflower seeds. However, this snack is not recommended if your child has braces or any sort of tree nut or peanut allergy.
